Q: What is Take a Swing at Cancer, Inc.?
A: Take A Swing at Cancer, Inc. (TASC) is a tax-exempt charity (IRS designated 501(c)(3)) that raises money to be used in the war against cancer. The emphasis of our fundraising events is sporting activities (for example, a softball tournament).
Q: Why was Take A Swing at Cancer, Inc. created?
A: In 1991, Andy Smyth created the Betty Smyth Softball Classic to be a memorial to his mother who died of cancer and to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The slogan for the softball tournament was "Take a Swing at Cancer". The event has continued and was named "Take a Swing at Cancer '96" in 1996. In the last few years, the American Cancer Society has found it can best leverage its limited resources by concentrating on three major events, and it has encouraged smaller events to become their own charities and donate the funds as they wish. Thus, Take A Swing at Cancer, Inc. has been created to be the umbrella organization for the "Take a Swing at Cancer" softball tournament. In addition, the creation of TASC opens the possibility of sponsoring other cancer related fund-raisers in the future.
Q: How will the funds be used?
A: The Board of Directors of TASC decides how to apportion the funds raised from each event. It is intended to donate the funds raised to other charities that provide services in the war on cancer, such as, research, treatment, family support, hospice, education, detection, and prevention.
TASC provides grants to families and individuals that allow them to focus more on cancer treatment and less on financial burden. These grants help families pay for adaptive equipment, transportation costs, and living expenses. TASC also provides grants to other non-profit agencies that include more personalized family support networks. Past beneficiaries have included: Childhood Cancer Lifeline, Hope Lodge, Angels Hope, Why Me, Inc. and Angels Above Charitable Trust.
